Writing an online dating profile

Making yourself stand out is key to online dating profile success. But are you showing off what makes you different? Rebecca Perkins shows us how we can celebrate our individuality

Would you date you? It’s a big question, right? It’s a really important one too, and one you must consider before you begin writing your online dating profile and start dating.

So many people are in such a rush to get a profile written and get out dating, that they’ve barely drawn breath from the ending of another relationship before they’re back out there. There is huge value in taking time to be on your own, to actually learn to love your own company, and to spend time in reflection.

Before I meet up with clients to work with them on writing their online dating profile, I send them a couple of exercises to do. One of them is to get them to write a list of their top 5 reasons someone would want to date them. It’s time to show yourself at your very best, there’s absolutely no point in being shy here. You need to be authentically you. Self-deprecation has no place in online dating.

These reasons need to be unique to you. We’re looking for a lot more than, ‘I have a good sense of humour’ or, ‘I have a wide circle of friends.’ We want something that’s going to make you stand out from everyone else, something that’s going to grab their attention and want to find out more about you. So, for example, instead of saying, ‘I love the theatre,’ try ‘my love of theatre has led me to join an amateur theatre group.’ It sounds much more interesting doesn’t it.

Or, instead of, ‘I love travel and good food,’ consider how much better, ‘a weekend spend sampling London’s amazing street food markets has led me to create a food blog; Barcelona and Singapore await’ sounds. Do you see how that sentence shows so much more of who you are?

It’s really important to know what makes you different so that you can stand out. Once you know what makes you unique you can then weave that through your online dating profile. You want potential dates to choose YOU rather than someone else, after all.
