The one thing I am passionate about...
I'm fascinated by the relationship between image and reality. I love history, especially ancient history (I have four, technically five favourite Pharaohs, one Caesar of choice and a favourite general from Alexander's army), but in some ways that's also a question of image versus reality so I guess it's consistent. Nothing excites me like a problem I haven't quite solved yet, and nothing makes me feel as real as the gospels (I have a favourite of those, too). Musicals make me joyful even while they make me cry, but only when the sets and lighting work as well as the lyrics.
I typically spend my leisure time
dividing my time between books and the real world. I would happily spend all my time somewhere between church, theatres and and museums if it made any kind of logistical sense, but can also be persuaded to spend time on things like enjoying architecture, perfecting my already frankly fantastic brownie recipe and writing postcards so that some people in the world can still look forward to snail mail. I have also planned whole holidays around specific musicals, so there's that as well.
The most influential person in my life has been
I'd like to think there are people in the world who want a real partnership- to keep each other going regardless of the terrain, I guess, both spiritually and otherwise. Somewhere between Kirk&Spock and Lois&Clark is the dynamic I would like to think we could one day achieve. I find intelligence attractive but I'd pick compassion over cleverness any day if for some reason someone made me pick.
The first thing people notice about me
Recently it's been my dog tags, which clank like a medieval ghost so people can often hear me coming before they even catch my eye.
The last book I read and enjoyed
if I have to have finished it then probably Peter Schaeffer's Amadeus? That play is perfect, I love everything about it from the details in the stage directions to the underlying tension that ties it all together from the first sentence to the last. Presently outside of reading for work I'm working on autobiographies by John Glenn and Mesut zil as well as John Lewis's March and also Rick Riordan's Carter Kane books. they're none of them much like the others and yet somehow it works.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- music with lyrics
- Rembrandt, Bernini and Kolo Moser to name just three
The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me
I don't know how anyone would notice, exactly, but I spent a chunk of my Masters degree learning to read Egyptian (hieroglyphs) and I still love to attempt it every chance I get.

A little more about me
I'm exactly as geeky as this all makes me sound, but I also get a lot of joy out of things like properly risen sponge cakes (other people's so far, sadly), perfectly formed snowflakes and the fact that marigolds are called Easter-bells in German. I will watch most any movie at least once, travel any distance to see a (real) T.Rex skeleton, and would rather listen to poetry than read it myself. For an art historian I have a terrible attitude to contemporary art. The football team I actually support is FC Bayern, but these days I also have to cheer for Man City and Barcelona in deference to my cousin's kids. Still and always DE inte
