The one thing I am passionate about...
I'm a quietly dedicated writer, and have had two collections of short stories published since 2006. I also use my writing to reflect on Welsh culture, and what it can contribute to the life of Europe. During a lull in the Yugoslavian war I met refugees in Serbia and Croatia, and more recently I've worked with bears in Europe and turtles in Costa Rica. I'm too much the heretic to be much of a church-goer, but it's very, very important to me to enact my principles, my sense of God, and my ideals. I have a few faithful friends I've known for 10-20 years, don't take on new friends quickly but almost never lose one.
I typically spend my leisure time
If I'm alone, I like a fire, wine, music, a good book, walking in the hills and fields, fording the odd stream and getting my trousers plastered with mud, and then going home to watch a Doctor Who DVD. I go to plays or concerts where I can, and also take part in poetry events and readings.
The most influential person in my life has been
I write for love, not money, and while I don't live in a garret I want a partner who sees the value of the everyday, who's prepared to break the ranks of hedonism. Someone with the courage to move towards marriage, setting past hurts in the past. Someone with integrity, sweetness, reliability, and someone who can see the fun of jumping into puddles!
The first thing people notice about me
My intelligence! Then, after that, my slightly off-beat sense of humour. Later, I hope, they notice my kindness and integrity. In the end they notice my determination. I'm not the yelling or pushing kind, but I'm very, very persistent in doing what I believe is right.
The last book I read and enjoyed
I often re-read Epictetus, a slave in Rome and a teacher who believed that personal integrity is the only foundation for happiness, and that people who long for wealth, status or popularity lose their freedom to people they think can dispense those things.
The three things which I am most thankful for
- Financial security, peace of mind, good conscience.
- The respect of my friends and the love of my family.
- My beautiful quarryman's cottage in the hills, books, music, and writing.
The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me
That they need to speak clearly... I find it hard to follow conversation against a background of music or noise.
Friends Describe me as
Caring, Good listener, Rational, Thoughtful
A little more about me
Not that I can think of. But if there's anything else you'd like to know about me, why not get in touch?
