Get the most from your photo gallery

by eHarmony

Posting photos on your eHarmony profile is about a lot more than showing your matches what you look like. Don’t just upload a lonely headshot – find out how to use your photo gallery to tell your life story.

Having a great eHarmony profile isn’t just about concentrating on one thing – be it thoughtful answers or an attractive main profile picture. It’s about the whole package, and one big element of that is using your photo gallery the best you can.

We’ve lost count of the number of profiles we’ve seen where the user has uploaded just one photo (and sometimes not a very good one) and left it at that. If you do have a photo that’s a great step – users with photos are nine times more likely to receive communication – but there’s much more you can do by using your photo gallery to tell your life story in pictures.

If you haven’t uploaded a photo yet, read our article ‘Online dating: photo dos and don’ts

Be honest
Your main image should be an honest, up-to-date photo of you. Yes, it’s tempting to upload something that’s was taken when you were a few pounds lighter, or had fewer grey hairs but this really is a false economy. If you meet up with someone and you’ve clearly posted an older photo of yourself, however well you get on in person, they’ll constantly be thinking that you lied to them from the outset. Enlist a friend to help you take lots of photos from different angles and pick your favourite three to go on your profile.

Your interests
It’s very attractive to see that someone has interests and passions, so show your matches what you like to do with your spare time. Whether that’s long countryside walks, cheering on your football team or going to gigs, include a photo of you doing something you really love. It’ll show on your face in the picture, and be instantly attractive to any match who has the same interests as you.

Friends and family
Your friends and family are at the centre of your world, so it makes sense for you to show your matches the people that are important to you. Don’t go overboard though – no one wants to see a whole slideshow of photos from your last holiday in Italy.

Your achievements
Whether you’ve helped your team win a regional final, gained a qualification or climbed a mountain, you should be proud of your achievements. Let your matches see that you like to stretch yourself and reach your goals – it shows dedication and an enthusiasm for life.

Your free time
How do you relax? Maybe it’s gardening, painting, or simply having a few drinks in the pub with your friends. Let your matches see how you like to chill out too – you need to balance out all those hobbies and accomplishments! One word of warning though: photos of you drunk on a night out will be a huge turn off. Relaxing in a beer garden with a pint and some friends – ok, dancing on tables at 3am after too many Sambucas – not ok.

You back in the day
This might sound like a contradiction to our first point, but posting photos of you when you were younger can actually tell your matches a lot about you. As long as you explain the significance of the photo in your caption, a picture of you back in the day can really illustrate who you are and where you’ve come from. And those old clothes can give them a bit of a giggle too.

Your profile photos are not just for a visitor to see what you look like (though they obviously help) but they also show the kind of person you are, and the life you lead. They can also really help to illustrate the points you make in your written profile, and potentially be the hook that gets a match to contact you. You can upload up to 12 photos, so don’t waste a single opportunity!

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for your query. I’ve checked with the team that does our manual photo uploads and they have a small backlog at the moment, but all the current photos we have received should be uploaded in the next 48 hours.

I’ve passed on your email address and they will let me know once your photo is up, so that I can let you know!

Hope that helps!

I have a problem with uploading a photo as my photos are all bigger than 5mg although taken on 2.0 on mobiles. they are the right format. How can I make this possible. I don’t have any problems with any other sites. When I can upload and see other members photos, i guess they have the same problem, I will come back when this problem is resoleved.

hi,

can you please tell me how you delete photo’s from your profile page

9

eharmony

12 August 2010 17:13

Hi Chris,

It’s quite simple to delete photos. Just follow these steps:

1. Log in and click the ‘My Profile’ tab
2. Click the ‘My Photos’ button on the left hand side – this will take you to a page showing all your uploaded photos
3. Under each photo, there is a ‘Delete’ link, simply click to delete that photo.
4. From here you can also upload new photos and choose your primary photo

Please note that if you delete photos, and then choose to upload them again, they will need to be re-approved before your matches are able to see them.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions you can call our Customer Care team for free, Mon-Fri, 8am-8pm on: 0800 028 0308

Best wishes,

Hi Michelle,

Thanks for getting in touch. I’ve forwarded your query to our Customer Care team, who will be able to tell you exactly why your photo hasn’t been approved. It’s likely that if you are wearing sunglasses your photo won’t be approved, though we don’t reject photos for being cropped.

Our Customer Care team will also be able to give you some tips on the best photos to upload!

Hi Anna,

Thanks for your comment. The ability to view a match’s photos depends on these factors:

1. Whether your match has posted a photo

2. Whether that photo has been approved by eHarmony

3. Whether you have purchased an eHarmony membership

If you do have a membership and you can’t see any of your matches photos, then please get in touch with our Customer Care team who will be able to help. You can call them on 0800 028 0308, Mon-Fri, 8am-8pm, for free.

Hi Helen,

You may choose not to post a photo, and matches still have the option of sending you a Photo Nudge if they are keen to see your photo. However, we would suggest that you do post a photo, as users who do are nine times more likely to receive communication on eHarmony. We understand that you may feel nervous about posting a photo, but you should be reassured that only the people you are matched with can see your profile photos. Unlike on other sites, users cannot just search for anyone’s profile.

24 January 2011 11:18

Hi Karen,

Thanks for your question. We don’t allow users to send photos via eHarmony Mail, to protect our users’ privacy. As best as we try to ensure only people with the best intentions have accounts on eHarmony, there will always be some people who abuse the system, potentially sending unsuitable photos etc. to their matches.

Of course it’s your choice whether or not you post a photo, but it’s worth remembering that on eHarmony no one can search for you – it’s only your matches who can see your photos. Having said that, we’ve had plenty of success stories between couples who didn’t initially post a photo, so it can be done!

Hope this helps.

The photo upload process definatley needs to be simplified. More detailed tabs. You dont have enough choices, it has plenty of delete options, but is not clear on the reasons why photos are not authorised, and its not clear how to set the primary photo.
Thanks for your time, hope you can simplyfy these issues. I have been successful in doing these things myself, but I wasted alot of time as Im not great on a computor.

Hi Alexandra,

All member photos are moderated by a customer care agent to primarily ensure nothing offensive is posted and also to be sure that members are posting the best possible photos of themselves. We are unable to view your profile so cannot comment on why your photo was rejected but please call our Customer Care team on 0800 028 0308. They will be able to tell you why you photo has been rejected.

I have someone professional coming tomorrow to teach me how to post photos on my profile as I wouldn’t meet anyone without having seen a picture, so would not expect them to meet me without having seen a photo. Costs £54. Groan.

2 August 2011 16:33

Hi Vicki,

Thanks for getting in touch. Regarding your first question about selecting which matches can see your photos, I’m afraid that’s not a feature we offer. Of course, if you chat to a match you like you can always send them a photo by email (If you’re hesitant about this, we suggest you set up an email address that’s only for contacting matches, and make sure the actual email address doesn’t have anything in it to identify you).

Looking at your email address, I think you are in Australia, so you should probably contact our Australian Customer Care team who will be able to answer any questions about why your photos aren’t appearing on your profile. However please remember that we do manually approve each photo (even if you’ve submitted it before) and this process takes around 24 hours.

You can find the link to live chat with our AU Customer Care team here: https://help-singles.eharmony.com.au/app/home

Hope this helps!

photos not uploading,,all correct size. seems to be a fundamental problem that your “customer service ” team are struggling to rectify by the sounds of all the other emails. When does this look likely to be fixed please?

83

eHarmony

17 August 2011 13:26

Hi Jo,

Thanks for your comment. We have one known issue with Internet Explorer 9 currently, that may stop users from uploading photos. If you are using Internet Explorer 9, please try viewing eHarmony in a different browser. I understand this is a hassle, but it is the quickest fix. We are currently working on a fix for this issue, which should be live within the next couple of weeks.

If you are not using IE9, then there are various reasons why your photos might not be uploading, and that’s why we suggest anyone having issues calls our Customer Care team. They will be able to view your account, and your photos and diagnose the problem. If your photos are being rejected, again, it will be helpful for you to call our Customer Care team as they will be able to tell you exactly why they’ve been rejected. All user photos are moderated manually, so as to ensure no offensive or inappropriate photos are uploaded.

Hope this helps!

Emily

86

eHarmony

22 August 2011 10:14

Hi Romeo,

All photos submitted are moderated by our Customer Care team and so take around 24 hours to appear. Looking at your email address I think you might be signed up to our Australian site – have you tried the Live Chat feature? You can talk to a Customer Care rep online about any issues you might be having with your account. Find out more here: https://help-singles.eharmony.com.au/app/home

We also have a dedicated Australian Advice site here: http://www.eharmony.com.au/relationship-advice/ Enjoy!

Hope this helps!

Hi Charlotte,

When you upload a photo you should be automatically taken to our FotoFlexer tool which allows you to crop, rotate and edit your photo to help you look your best! If you have already uploaded your photo and skipped this stage then you cannot go back. If you have uploaded a photo and missed this stage by mistake please delete your photo and upload again.

Hope this helps!

3 October 2011 10:23

Hi Alison,

Thanks for your comment. Usually photos are approved within 24 hours (they are manually approved to ensure all profile photos are good quality). They may have been declined – this can be for lots of reasons such as image size, or if you’re wearing sunglasses. However, you should have been informed if they were declined and given some tips on uploading the right kind of photo. I have forwarded your email address to our Customer Care team and asked them to contact you regarding your photos – hopefully we will be able to get your photos live very soon.

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for commenting. I’m not sure what you mean by 10 most frequently asked questions – could you expand?

Regarding payment if you meet someone, but not through eHarmony, I’m afraid you wouldn’t receive a refund – it’s the chance you take :)

Also, I believe you are from Australia, so you might want to check out our Australian Advice site: http://www.eharmony.com.au/relationship-advice/

Hello,

I’ve joined for the free communication weekend and completed my profile, including uploading pictures. It still says only 85% complete, and is showing the photo section as incomplete. I can’t figure out why it won’t complete my profile and show my pictures when I click on ‘view my profile’, even though I’ve uploaded 9 or so images.
Thanks.

6 February 2012 19:04

Hi Daniela,

There is a small bug in our system that means currently profiles aren’t showing as 100% complete even if they are. I suspect your profile is probably showing as fuller now as your photos will have been approved. Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions please call our Customer Care team for free on 0800 028 0308.

Best wishes,
