10 Happy Music Relationships
Most romantic songs tend to be about enduring love. Ironically, the relationships of many well-known musicians seem almost impossibly short-lived. But is the stereotype of the five-times-married rock star unfair? Does fame ruin all chances of a life-long partnership? Not if these people are anything to go by…
Bon Jovi – 1989 to present
Despite being one of rock’s classic heartthrobs, it seems old Jon Bon only ever had eyes for one girl – his first love, Dorothea Hurley.
Tom Waits – 1980 to present
The growliest man on record met his future wife, Kathleen Brennan, during the filming of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 movie, ‘One from the Heart’. She is credited as a collaborator and co-writer and a variety of Waits projects and regarded by the man himself as an ‘incandescent presence on all songs we work on together’.
Julia Varady – 1977 to 2012
Júlia Várady is a German soprano who was originally born in Transylvania. She was married to the German baritone, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, from 1977 until his death in 2012.
Shadows – 2009 to present
The lead singer of Californian metal band, Avenged Sevenfold, married his childhood sweetheart, Valery Sanders, in 2009. Prior to marrying Shadows, Sanders had sung on stage with the band and been their tour manager for four years.
Dee Snider – 1981 to present
Twisted Sister front-man, Dee Snider, first met his future wife, Suzette Snider, after she snuck into a nightclub when she was 15. The pair were married in 1981 and have been together ever since.
Kurt Weill – 1926 to 1950
Weill was an idealistic German composer who mostly wrote for the stage. His Austrian wife, Lotte Lenya, provided the vocals for most of his work. Weill first saw Lenya in 1922, when she auditioned for his very first stage score, ‘Zaubernacht’. The two didn’t meet properly until 1924, but were married just two years later. The relationship, though tempestuous, lasted until Weill’s death in 1950.
David Bowie – 1992 to present
The great David Bowie married his then-supermodel wife, Iman, in 1992. The couple met on a blind date in 1990.
Johnny Cash – 1968 to 2003
The man in black found the love of his life in the form of celebrated country musician, June Carter. After having toured with the Carter Family in the early ‘60s, Cash finally proposed to Carter during one of his gigs at the London Ice House in Canada in 1968. The pair remained married until June died in 2003. Cash died just four months later.
Ringo Starr – 1981 to present
The ex-Beatle might get a hard time for his musical skills, but his ability as a husband is admirable. Starr has been married for nearly 25 years to his wife, Barbara Bach. The two met on the set of a film (the instantly forgettable ‘Caveman’) in 1980 and married a year later.
Keith Richards – 1983 to present
Unlike his more wayward band-mates, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has been married since 1983. Richards first met his wife, Patti Hansen, in 1979 and has credited her for helping him stay on the ‘straight and narrow’.
