The Holiday

With its star-studded cast – including Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and Cameron Diaz – The Holiday is the perfect Christmas rom-com – with a transatlantic twist. While You Were Sleeping

A classic among romantic Christmas movies – and one that has stood the test of time – While You Were Sleeping stars Sandra Bullock as a Chicago singleton mistaken as the fiancé of her commuter crush, Peter Callaghan, when he falls onto the tracks and into a coma. About A Boy

The chemistry between Hugh Grant and Nicholas Hoult helps to make About A Boy one of the top romantic Christmas movies. To meet women, Hugh Grant’s Will joins a single parent support group (despite not being a father) and through the group, he meets 12-year-old Marcus. The two form a supportive big brother type relationship, which helps them to navigate their respective romantic pursuits. The film’s big musical finish (followed by a Christmas epilogue) will have you cheering along with them both.

White Christmas

If you’re in the mood for a true Christmas classic, settle down with White Christmas. This 1954 Bing Crosby vehicle, follows two aspiring entertainers and WWII veterans – Bob and Phil – as they romance singing double-act Betty and Judy. The couples undergo various relationship trials and tribulations throughout the movie, but the theme of longing for snow at Christmas runs throughout. Be sure to sing along to White Christmas with Bing – he even invites you to raise a glass and toast the festive season as a finale!

Meet Me in St. Louis

If you love musicals, you’ll love Meet Me in St. Louis. You’re sure to recognise its best-known song Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and the romance between Judy Garland’s Esther and John, as well as her sister Rose and Warren, will have you hooked from the start. The movie chronicles a year in the life of the Smith family in the run-up to the 1904 World Fair. John and Esther’s relationship is plagued with plenty of false starts and miscommunications but their sweet kisses and dance at the Christmas Eve ball more than make up for it.

The Apartment

While not often listed among the most romantic Christmas movies, The Apartment is included in our round-up thanks to a pivotal scene that takes place at a Christmas party. The film stars Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine who meet at work and, despite Shirley’s character Fran being involved with their mutual boss Sheldrake, fall in love. It’s a great will they/won’t they plot with a dose of humour. And when it comes to closing lines, they don’t get much better than ‘Shut up and deal.’
