The power of smiling

Ever heard the phrase, ‘smile and the world smiles with you’? Well, it couldn’t be more apt than when it comes to dating. Darren from DatingPriceGuide.co.uk looks at the power of smiling

In the dating world, a smile goes a long way. Believe it or not, but smiling could actually be your secret weapon when it comes to attracting a partner. You know that feeling in your stomach – the butterflies – that you get when you lock eyes with someone and they shoot you a smile? Well, studies have shown that seeing someone smile at you, instantly makes you like them more. This is based on the presumption that, if they smiled at you, then they must like the look of you, and as studies have shown, when someone likes us, we’re more likely to like them back.

So, smiling can get someone to like you more, but it also has some other benefits…

Smiling can make you more attractive

Research has shown that smiling can make you look more attractive. When you smile, the smile lights up your face and makes you appear younger. This, in turn, makes you more appealing as we’re instinctively drawn to partners who look young and healthy. It’s all do with our ancestors and the importance of procreation. As well as making you look younger, a study conducted at UMKC discovered that smiling can also make your face appear slimmer – an added bonus!

Smiling elevates your mood and boosts confidence

Behavioural psychologists have suggested that smiling instantly improves our moods, making us feel happier and less stressed. This, in turn, boosts our confidence levels. When we smile, our brains release feel-good chemicals – dopamine, endorphins and serotonin. These chemicals combine to give us a ‘rush’ that makes us feel happier and more content. That’s why, no matter how nervous you are on a first date, you should always smile. You’ll instantly feel more relaxed and, as smiling is infectious; you’ll get your date breaking into a smile too.

Smiling is infectious

If you don’t believe that smiles spread, check out the TED talk ‘The Hidden Power of Smiling’ to find out the science behind it. In fact, studies have shown that even a forced smile can lighten your mood and boost your confidence, making you appear happier, healthier and more attractive.

So, it’s true what they say, a smile really does go a long way, especially in the dating world. Kindness is always the best approach; smile at your date and the chances that things will develop into a relationship will be much higher. You and your date will feel happier and more relaxed – and you might both leave smiling too!
