What does your holiday choice say about you?
The first holiday away as a couple is an important time in a blossoming relationship – 24% of people surveyed by eHarmony.co.uk deciding that a partner was right for them after the first romantic getaway. And thanks to more affordable travel options, couples are going away earlier in their relationship than ever before.
But what does your choice of holiday destination say about you?
With some help from travel experts Skyscanner.net and celebrity relationship expert Sloan Sheridan-Williams, we looked at ten of the most popular and romantic European “date-cation” destinations to understand what types of personalities pick Berlin over Budapest or Paris over Prague.
The picturesque city of love, culture, art and gastronomy – everyone knows the clichés so take some tips from the locals and go beyond the bright lights of the Moulin Rouge. A weekend Paris will hopefully have that special someone smiling more than the Mona Lisa. Soak up the café culture with a croissant in hand, or dance the night away to the new sound of the city.
This is the city of choice for all hopeless romantics who enjoys the finer things in life especially the arts, fine dining and fashionable boutiques. You like to think you are cultured and creative so love the idea of wandering around museums, people watching at a café sipping coffee or doing your best bohemian chic impression walking the cobbled streets of Montmartre. For you, Paris is ideal as it has a rich history of art and literature which you love but you also get great pleasure from immersing yourself in the café culture and probably try to impress your date with your outgoing character, elegant manners and French language skills.
It may have earned a reputation as a bit of a party town in recent years, but Prague is still the perfect setting for a romantic medieval fairy tale. Pass an easy few hours strolling the winding streets, or sit down to browse your copy of a Kafka classic beneath the iconic Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square.
Those who choose Prague are most likely to be independent, fun-loving, sociable types who enjoy letting their hair down over a few drinks. You have an outgoing nature and are fun to be around so you probably have a reputation of being the life and soul of a party. The lively city of Prague allows you to enjoy romance without too much commitment or expectations so it is ideal for a first trip away. However remember to show your loved one that you do have a romantic side underneath your party animal exterior with a tour of the medieval city.
Straddling the River Danube, Budapest is often referred to as the ‘Paris of the East’ because of its beautiful architecture, wide boulevards and romantic atmosphere. It’s a city made of two halves – the historical ‘Buda’ side with the UNESCO listed Castle District and the newer ‘Pest’ side, famed for its magnificent Art Nouveau buildings.
For those who don’t want the full-on expectations of Paris but still crave the style and sophistication of a romantic European destination, Budapest is just far enough off the beaten track to still offer the charm of a Western city with the added bonus of Eastern medieval castles. An artistic and historical passion indulged in the ‘Buda’ Castle District will be perfectly counter balanced by the artsy architecture of the ‘Pest’ side.
Strike a pose in Italy’s fashion capital, home to one of the biggest events in the catwalk calendar, Milan Fashion Week. Milan also has some of the best football teams in Europe and so many art galleries you’ll be praying for a rainy day, not to mention the largest church in Italy, the Duomo di Milano. Fashion, football and a spot of culture; you’re bound to find something to love.
Like this northern Italian city, you have an air of classical sophistication about you and you’re likely to be a stylish, well groomed connoisseur of food and fashion. You feel most comfortable with routine, consistency and organisation so prefer to follow an itinerary or plan. Like the football Milan is famous for, you are a game of two halves. You might tend to be reserved and perhaps a little aloof at first when you start dating but once you warm to somebody new and go on your first ‘date-cation’, you will show off your vibrant fun-loving side.
Madrid is one of Spain’s major cultural and financial centres, so expect plenty of sharp suits and stunning architecture. The restaurants are second to none and you’ve got a good chance of sniffing out some real deal tapas. From touring Bernabeu stadium to strolling along the banks of the Reina Sofia, with a few world-class art galleries thrown into the mix Madrid is perfect for a culture-rich trip with superb food and lively nightlife.
If Madrid takes your fancy then you are most likely a traditionalist, often preferring to play by the rules and gaining comfort and certainty from routine and order. You feel at home in busy environments and adapt well to the hectic edgy pace of metropolitan life. You are comfortable with contemporary modern surroundings but appreciate traditional architecture and local cuisine. Madrid attracts well-rounded individual with varied taste and like the city itself you have lots to offer that special someone.
Perhaps one of the world’s most photogenic cities, you’ll find the past and present sitting harmoniously side-by-side in Barcelona. Admire Catalan architecture and Gaudi’s masterpieces, flit through the shops along Las Ramblas and seek out authentic tapas bars hidden down back alleys. Sun, sea and some pretty cool night time hangouts; sounds like a recipe for love.
Barcelona has an eclectic and relaxed vibe which is well suited for those who are without pretensions or snobbery. Escaping from the modern European gastronomy of its French neighbours, Barcelona dishes up authentic tapas washed down by plenty of beer so this is the perfect destination for those looking for a warm friendly atmosphere with plenty of gutsy passion. There is also plenty going on to keep active travellers happy with extreme sports within easy reach of the city centre. Those who prefer a more cultured, artistic city break can enjoy the dazzling architecture walking hand in hand with their travel companion.
Scarred by war, split in two and reunited over the past few decades, Berlin today has been transformed into a vibrant 24-hour city. Crammed full of museums, art galleries, quirky hotels and brauhaus for you to sample local brews, it’s a refreshingly youthful city with a thriving film and live music scene.
Berlin is ideal for young, fresh, independent thinkers considering themselves creative and cultured who search out stimulating experiences and environments while being sociable on a spectrum that ranges from outgoing to hedonistic. Regardless of your preferred club night, Berlin attracts the type of person who is contemporary, fun and relaxed. Berlin suits those who work hard and play harder so is perfect for career-driven, professional couples who need to let go of work stress, recharge their batteries and reconnect with each other while having a good time in this upbeat vibrant city
