How to Impress your Vegetarian Date in London

by

In some European capitals finding a meat-free menu can be a tall order. Thankfully, in London there are some gems tucked away with food on offer that can even have committed carnivores wondering why they were bothering with meat in the first place.

So if you’ve got a vegetarian date coming up, don’t panic, just read on and prepare to bask in the reflected glory these terrific venues will bestow upon you.

The Gate

370 St John St, London EC1V 4NN

A decidedly upmarket venue at Angel in Islington, the food at The Gate is seriously impressive. It’s for this reason that even on a Monday night the place is usually booked up. It’s not difficult to get a reservation though and you’ll be rewarded with beautifully presented dishes and an excellent selection of wines. This is a class act, but at a very reasonable price. Dinner for two with starters and wine comes in at about £70.00.

Vanilla Black

17-18 Took’s Ct, London EC4A 1LB

For something a bit more experimental, try the delicate textures on offer at this snazzy city restaurant. With culinary wizardry of the sort Heston Blumenthal has championed, this vegetarian restaurant is a real experience. A minimalist, edgy atmosphere with discreet lighting helps make this restaurant a high-end option for an impressive date. Luxury comes at a premium though, with a set two-course dinner priced at £28.00

The Gallery Café

21 Old Ford Rd, Bethnal Green, London E2 9PL

The Gallery Café in Bethnal Green is a great weekend destination. Standing opposite the museum of Childhood, this vegan and vegetarian café is decorated with regularly changing artworks and as darkness falls, candlelight maintains the romantic atmosphere. Specials change every day and the menu offers vegan cheese pizzas and locally sourced beers. In addition, the café raises funds for the community arts charity St. Margaret’s House.

Mildreds

45 Lexington Street, London, W1F 9AN

Regularly described as London’s “coolest” vegetarian restaurant, Mildreds has become something of an institution in Soho since it first opened its doors over 25 years ago. The menu draws extensively on Middle Eastern cuisine, with fragrant and lightly spiced dishes. All of the produce is ethically sourced, and even the wine, milk, coffee and tea are organic. This cosy restaurant is sensibly priced, with main courses at a very reasonable £8 – £10.

Sagar

157 King Street, London, W6 9JT

A vegetarian date lends itself extremely well to Indian dining, and this south Indian restaurant in Hammersmith should be at the top of any list of considerations. The restaurant has won a loyal clientele with its consistently marvellous fare that is exciting, without bearing an oppressive price tag. The Hammersmith branch is bright and airy, with restrained Indian decor. Try the thalis for a taste of everything. A meal for two with beers costs about £30.
