How to revamp your online dating profile for the New Year
Give your online dating profile a new lease of life for the New Year with top tips from dating expert James Preece
The start of a new year is the time that we all reflect about the things we want to change. If we’re looking to meet someone amazing, then we’ll make a resolution to finally do something about it. That’s why January is the busiest time for online dating, with lots of new members signing up to give it a go. To make the most of this peak season, I’m here to tell you exactly what you need to do in order to give your online dating profile a New Year revamp.
Update your dating profile
First things first; does your profile still reflect the person you are? Most of us grow over time so our personalities, ambitions and needs will change.
There’s nothing worse than reading a profile that’s clearly dated. If you originally wrote that you’ve only just signed up to the site and, in fact, you’ve been there for ages, then it’s going to be obvious.
Take out anything that doesn’t serve the purpose of pitching you as a great catch. That includes any waffling text that doesn’t really say anything at all. Break it up into short paragraphs so that you can make it quick and easy to read.
Likewise, if your profile is too short, then now’s the time to add some more interesting details.
Add some buzzwords
A new year offers new beginnings and positive thoughts. So, if you want to ensure that your profile looks really fresh, use positive buzzwords that project happiness. Opt for words like ‘optimistic’ and ‘ambitious’ or try to include statements such as ‘I’m excited about’ and ‘I love to…’ These will make the reader feel good about themselves and want to get to know you better.
You don’t have to overdo it, but a little can go a long way.
Change your photos
When did you last change your online dating profile photo? Most people like to upload the one they like best and then leave it up for as long as it takes. However, there are plenty of advantages to changing it now. Try something a little smarter, or perhaps more seasonal. A cute scarf or a wintery background will help you stand out from your competition.
Another bonus is that, if someone overlooked you the first time, they might give you a second look now. It’s a simple technique but it can make a huge difference.
Mix in some new hobbies and stories
Have you been anywhere new over the last few months? Or tried any activities or hobbies that you really enjoyed? Tell the reader about them. If you’re passionate about something – anything – then that will resonate and help you to sell yourself much more.
If there’s something you’re thinking of doing this year, a place that you might want to go, or an event you’d like to experience, then why not write about it? You never know, you might just find someone who’d love to join you!
Add a hook
Hooks are important in online dating but so many people forget to use them. They’re the difference between having a bland, generic profile and an engaging, irresistible one. A hook is a question, an icebreaker or statement that gives the other person a good reason to contact you.
Some great examples are: ‘What’s your favourite childhood memory?’ or ‘If you were going to cook for me on a date, what would you make?’
Once you include a hook, it makes it so much easier for others to start a conversation with you, rather than trying too hard to think of something clever to say.
I hope you’ve found these tips useful. Remember; no matter how good your profile is, you still need to be proactive and contact lots of people. So, start messaging the ones you like now and you might just find a partner quicker than you ever thought you would.
