Punbelievable: why humour is one of the most desirable traits

sense of humour

You can sweep someone off their feet in a number of ways. But being funny appeals to even the most jaded heart. Just make sure your jokes are compatible…

If you want to impress a new date you don’t need to buy expensive trainers or splash out on a haircut. According to data scientists at eharmony, one of the surest ways to make a romantic impact is to tickle a prospective partner’s funny bone.

You might even want to treat your date to a night at The Comedy Store, which is why we’re giving away two pairs of free tickets (see bottom of page for details).

Our experts studied 1,500 eharmony members to determine the importance of humour and how it relates to compatibility. Findings suggest it ranks as the third most important trait in terms of attracting a partner beating good looks, cleverness and even being good in bed.

Our survey also reveals that, contrary to popular perception, most singles rate honesty and kindness way ahead of sexual prowess and a gym-toned body.

But when it comes to humour, we’re all pretty subjective. What one person finds funny might tempt another bolting for the exit, because studies show there are several different styles of humour.

What we find funny falls into six distinct categories: bodily humour, dark, physical, self-deprecating, surreal and wordplay. What people really mean when they say they want a partner with a ‘good sense of humour’ is they want someone with a compatible sense of humour.

When looking at the most attractive type of humour overall, wordplay wins – half of Brits (47%) think a quick-witted partner would be the best match for them. After wordplay, self-deprecating humour (31%) – where an individual reflects on their own shortcomings for comedic effect – and dark humour (28%) are the most appealing.

The research suggests that if one half of a couple is strong on wordplay and the other has a dark sense of humour, they’re brilliantly matched, because the two styles blend so well.

On the other hand, only one in 10 Brits finds toilet humour attractive (12%) – well, at least in a romantic context, so steer clear of flatulence jokes. In fact, four in 10 (44%) people would be put off a second date if a prospective partner made a crude joke.

Better news is that two thirds of us (68%) say a good sense of humour is a turn on, leading to one in five (20%) having been laughed into bed in the past (being laughed out of bed might not be so much fun).

But what about couples who have been together for some time? Can something as simple as laughing keep an otherwise lacklustre relationship going? Our data was inconclusive, but did show that those in the first few years of love are more likely to appreciate their other half’s humour, with six in 10 (60%) finding their partner funny.

On the other hand, just 40% of married couples think their husband or wife has a good sense of humour, suggesting perhaps that a night at The Comedy Store might revive a bit of mutual marital chemistry. Go on!

4 Self-deprecating: Where an individual makes fun of themselves and their shortcomings for the enjoyment of others
