Did you know that Glasgow is the most single city in Scotland? The experts at eharmony investigate why singles might be struggling to find lasting love in the city

Did you know that Glasgow is the most single city in Scotland? That’s according to recent ONS data. But why is it seemingly harder to find love in Glasgow than anywhere else in the country? The experts at eharmony conducted an in-depth study to find out.

Has Glasgow given up on love?

We know that finding love can be complex and feel elusive, but the results of our study revealed that 58% of single Glaswegians have given up on finding love completely! Similarly, 49% feel overwhelmed by the modern dating landscape and 64% – that’s almost two thirds – think they’ll be single forever.

The stats sound bleak, but when we delved deeper to look closely at the reasons why Glasgow singles feel so disheartened, a few themes emerged. Confidence, or the lack of it, is a driving factor. 45% admitted that their love self-esteem makes dating difficult. A quarter of singles in Glasgow also told us that they feel unattractive, while 20% worry that their age is having a negative impact on their search for lasting love.

When past experiences impact the present

Many single Glaswegians taking part in our study revealed that their past experiences have a lasting impact when looking for love today. 20% still feel hurt from negative experiences in past relationships while one in ten singles reported feeling disheartened after meeting a string of the wrong people on bad dates. And the impact of these past experiences can be wide-reaching; in fact, a quarter of Glaswegian singles have not had a relationship in over 10 years.

What would make a difference to dating in Glasgow?

The good news is that our study revealed there are several things that could inspire single Glaswegians to kick-start the search for lasting love again. 30% agreed that they would benefit from specific advice on dating over 40, while a quarter would like tips on overcoming dating anxiety, and 19% would like help dealing with baggage from previous relationships.
