Six great rooftop bars in the UK
When the sun is shining and the mercury begins to rise, a gloomy pub is the last place you want to be. Make the most of any fleeting fine weather by taking your date to one of the UK’s many fun and sophisticated rooftop bars.
It’s no surprise that the UK’s party capital boasts a plethora of quality sun-drenched bars. One of the ones most suited to couples is Bohemia – an elegant glass-walled affair situated in the romantic South Laine area. Expect champagne buckets, big sunglasses and people you vaguely recognise from TV.

The Forth, Newcastle
The seemingly hodgepodge style of the Forth’s roof terrace is anything but. It combines artwork by local artists, a jumble of reclaimed furniture, and a fine selection of British cask ales and American craft beers. As one of the few rooftop bars in Newcastle, the Forth can get a little busy. Despite this, the atmosphere is always charmingly laid back.

The Bureau, Birmingham
Housed in a Grade II listed turn-of-the-century building, the Bureau bar is a chic cocktail bar with a fantastic rooftop terrace. Accessed via an elegant set of spiral stairs, the Gin Terrace boasts its own bar and intimate booth seating.

Golden Bee, London
Since opening its doors in 2012, the rooftop bar at the Golden Bee in Shoreditch has attracted quite a name for itself. By day, the terrace has a feel-good tropical atmosphere. At night, the heaters come on, as do the hundreds of twinkly lights and resident DJ. If you fancy a mid-week date, the terrace turns into an open-air cinema every Wednesday.

Roof Garden Playground, Manchester
What was once a Victorian school house on Great John Street is now a chic hotel topped with a fantastic rooftop bar. The south-facing terrace is stylishly fitted out with wicker, wood and chrome, and has great views to boot. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the area is regularly used as a venue for private parties – so check in advance that it’s open to the public before turning up with your date.
