Why dating in your 60s can be more fun!

There’s no age limit on dating and, if anything, the older you are the more fun it can be because you aren’t hampered by the cares and constraints of younger generations.

They say that 60 is the new 40 – the time for life to begin. In terms of romance there are many advantages to starting a new relationship in your 60s, not least that you are nearing retirement age so will benefit enormously from having a life partner to accompany you on all those adventures you’re yet to have. Starting dating again can be an exhilarating and life-changing experience and one that you may find is much more fun now that you’re older. Here are just some of the reasons why.

Self knowledge

By the time you reach your 60s, you have a pretty good idea of who you are and what’s important to you. You’ve been around the block a few times and made all sorts of mistakes which helped define you as a person. You can see your faults as well as your assets and have the advantage of being able to look back and see what times in your life have been most fulfilling and satisfying.

This self-knowledge will help you identify what type of relationship you’re looking for and how you can achieve your goals. The things that make you happy and content in life may be much clearer as you have more life experience to draw upon. Knowing how to let your hair down and have fun both as an individual, and as part of a couple, is an important part of enjoying life. Many people report feel less self-conscious and inhibited in middle age than they did when they were younger.

Emotional stability

Although romance can still be filled with highs and lows, the resilience and emotional stability that people often develop in later life will help you handle it all much better.

Emotional maturity is not the same as physical maturity. You can still feel very young at heart in your 60s, but you’ll have also developed some vital characteristics which are essential for healthy relationships. These include the ability to be objective, and to respond to facts rather than being overwhelmed by your feelings. These qualities often make the experience of relationships much more enjoyable as you feel more relaxed and in control of your emotions.

Time to enjoy

The biggest reason why dating in your 60s is often more fun is because you have more time to enjoy it. In earlier life juggling the demands of family, career and socialising may mean that romantic relationships get pushed to the side-lines. Spending time with someone you’re really compatible with can be enriching and rewarding. The more time you can invest in a new relationship the deeper and more lasting it’s likely to be.

Relationships are stimulating both to the mind and body and scientists have proven that people in loving relationships not only report being happier but also live longer and overcome illnesses quicker.

Financial freedom

If you are fortunate enough to have financial stability you may have opportunities to fulfil the dreams and ambitions you never had the chance to when you were younger. Having an enthusiastic and loving partner by your side can make new ventures doubly fun but also give you the motivation to stretch yourself and enhance your life in new ways.

Even without a secure financial base you’re still likely to have more fun because your perspective on what’s really important in life is likely to be different. You may have come to see that love really is what makes the world go round not material wealth. If you are in a happy relationship you can feel like the richest person in the world even if you have relatively little in the bank.

Life is, after all, what you make it and there is no reason why the fun new relationships can bring should stop at any age.
