British Film Institute, Southbank

Dinner and a movie takes on a whole new meaning when it comes to the British Film Institute. A bit of an upgrade on your local screen, it’s got an impressive selection of old, new and independent films, two trendy bars and a first-rate spot overlooking the river Thames.

So it’s no surprise that Katherine, who met her date through eHarmony, picked the BFI’s Riverside Cafe for her first date venue – “It has such a beautiful view over the Thames, without being too over the top,” she says. And with an informal menu of burgers, salads and Brit-classics like fish and chips, it’s a great place to let your guard down and the conversation flow. It worked too – Katherine and her date met again two days later.

If you’re looking for something a little more special, try the Benugo Bar & Kitchen upstairs for seasonal dishes, cocktails and a curated wine list. There’s even the Drawing Room to retire to, a cosy cocktail bar behind a secret doorway (read: bookcase) – a nice surprise for your date, providing they’re not a BFI regular of course.

There’s something for every taste in their cinema line up too – from classic to contemporary, this season’s blockbusters to films you’ve never heard of before. It’s the kind of place that offers an old horror movie like the 1939 version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, as well as the chance to join the Twi-hards for a discussion on the success of the Twilight saga.

Whatever you end up eating, drinking or watching at the BFI, be sure to end your date with a stroll along the Southbank – it’s how they’d do it in the movies.
