Chatsworth House, Derbyshire
Dating isn’t quite the same as it was in Jane Austen’s time. These days you don’t need sideburns, corsets or chaperones to re-create a little Regency-era romance, you just need a ticket to Chatsworth House. The inspiration for the grand estate of one of literature’s most iconic romantic heroes, and a ‘very memorable and wonderful first date’ for eHarmony’s Louise and Vaughan.
And you won’t just be walking in literary footsteps; you’ll be treading the same floors and gardens as Keira Knightley too. Chatsworth House is famous in its own right, having played the part of Pemberley (home to Mr. Darcy) first in the big-screen adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and again for the BBC’s Death Comes To Pemberley. If you’re not an Austen fan, you might recognise Chatsworth from The Wolfman instead, starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.
But there’s much more to Chatsworth than its activity as a film set, in fact it’s the kind of first date venue that has a little something for everyone. Historians will enjoy exploring the 30 rooms, from the Sculpture Gallery to the family-used chapel. There are exhibitions for art fans and a farm for animal-lovers, and after 450 years of perfecting, everyone will enjoy their gardens. They’ve even got an award-winning farm shop, so you can take something tasty home with you.
“It was a lovely day with our dogs as well,” says Louise, “we spent it wandering round the grounds with a delicious lunch in their restaurant, and followed by dinner in one of the local village pubs. It would be a lovely day for couples with similar interests as it makes for a long and interesting day with plenty to capture the imagination and lots of fun and cosy photo opportunities!”
Plus, it’s the kind of place that gives you lots of inspiration for follow up dates too – like a Chatsworth film night. And if you go for the complete ticket for £19, you’ll get a half price return too – a great way to broach the subject of a second date.
They close in the winter, so check their website before you go – www.chatsworth.org or call 01246 565300.
