London Monument, Monument
If you’re looking for a first date to get your heart racing, you’ll be hard pressed to beat the London Monument. But don’t let the climb put you off, the 311-step workout will be worth it when you catch sight of the panoramic views at the top.
Often overlooked by Londoners, it’s actually pretty famous – holding the record for the tallest isolated stone column in the world. Plus, with a recent £4.5 million makeover, there’s never been a better time to go.
Completed in 1677 as a monument to the Great Fire of London, it’s steeped in history. You can grab a guide on the way up and share some of the tower’s stories or spot some of London’s most iconic architecture from the viewing gallery. Either way, it’ll give you more than enough to talk about. For eHarmony couple Matt and Karen, it offered a great starting point for their date (and relationship) – “We had cottoned on to the fact that we were both pretty competitive people,” Karen says, “so of course I was going to climb to the top even though my legs were still recovering from the day before.”
When you’ve had your fill of the view, you can head back down and collect your certificate, congratulating you on surviving the climb – a date souvenir that beats a ticket stub or restaurant bill any day. And afterwards, you can collapse into one of the local coffee shops or satisfy yourself with a proper lunch – you’d have earned it.
Find out the opening hours or pick up some handy facts on their website www.themonument.info, or give them a call on 020 7626 2717.
