The Hardwick Inn, Chesterfield
There are a few things that might encourage you to pick the Hardwick Inn for a first date. It might be the beautiful building – constructed using locally quarried sandstone and dating back to the 15th century. It could be the home-cooked food, sourced from the Derbyshire countryside’s markets and farmers. It could even be the open coal fires you’ll catch if you go on a cold day. Any of those things might tempt you, and if not, the selection of over 200 malt whiskeys might do the trick.
Whatever the reason, it’s not a venue you’ll regret. “It was a lovely setting for a first date,” says eHarmony’s Ellen who met Brian there, “in fact we’d been there all night and never stopped talking! So much so we didn’t recognise that everyone had left and the landlord was waiting to lock up!”
Run by the same family for three generations, they’ve maintained the traditional feel and promise that stepping inside feels like stepping back in time. And if you fancy continuing down the historical path after you’ve filled up on food and whiskey, you’re only a stroll away from Hardwick Hall – a grand Elizabethan estate owned by the National Trust.
All in all, it’s a pretty romantic place for a pub date – the kind that’s sure to put you both at ease and have you talking, just like Ellen and Brian, until closing time.
