The Rosemary Branch Theatre, Hoxton

For some, booking a big theatre show can feel a little much for a first date. But if your conversations have revealed a love for the stage you don’t want to ignore, then The Rosemary Bunch is the perfect compromise.

“It’s a pub/theatre so perfect for a date,” say eHarmony couple Michelle and Andrew. “A great conversation starter and the plays we’ve been to see are always laugh-out-loud funny. And if you fancy heading onwards after, it’s also not too far from Shoreditch and its bars.”

The Rosemary Branch hasn’t fallen far from its roots as a Victorian music hall. With anything from Wuthering Heights to a 5-star Christmas panto on the bill, it’s a little less conventional than your average theatre house. But that’s what makes it a local and London favourite. That and the creative team behind it all – Cecilia and Cleo, who’ve spent 15 years as Artistic Directors of the theatre.

For a really special night book the Royal Box at the back – it’s made for two, with space for an ice bucket and a pair of Champagne flutes.

And you don’t need to rely on the ‘Theatre and Dinner’ packages that the West-End offers either – The Rosemary’s a pub too. The quirky decor, huge selection of drinks and an OWE (Off West End) award for ‘Best Foodie Experience’ in 2011, all make for a winning first-date combination. With a menu that changes every week and an East London famous roast on Sundays, they’re just as good with the food as they are at providing the entertainment.
