Tintern Abbey, Gwent
You don’t usually imagine good relationships starting in ruins. But if you’re based in the Wye Valley, you might want to reconsider. eHarmony couple Juliet and Philip think Wales’ Tintern Abbey is the best place you could begin.
Often described as exquisite or majestic, the Abbey seems to bring out the closet romantic in everyone who visits. Even iconic British poet William Wordsworth was moved to compose a poem declaring his love for the area – a poem that continues for 160 lines no less. And with the green of the Wye Valley, the cliffs and the river nearby, it’s not surprising that people feel awed. Find out more about the buildings (some dating back to the 12th century) with a guide from the gift shop – a great ice breaker too.
When you’ve finished marvelling at the remaining windows, columns and arches, you can continue your date with a walk around the picturesque countryside. For Juliet, that’s one of the best parts – “It’s nice to meet someone and go walking on a first date,” she says. “I think it’s much more relaxing when you compare it to sitting opposite someone in a pub or restaurant!”
There are plenty of trails around to suit both experienced and casual walkers, but don’t miss the Devil’s Pulpit – a limestone rock jutting out from the cliff where the Devil was said to have preached to the monks below.
And even in the midst of all the beauty, you’ll be happy to hear there’s plenty of parking too. Find out more by visiting the CADW website on www.cadw.wales.gov.uk.
