Union Chapel, Islington London

by

This is a really unique venue in London.

Not only is it a working church and community centre with a long running programme to help homeless people, but it’s also an award winning arts venue that has played host to rock bands, comedians, classical and jazz musicians, and all kinds of live performance. Time Out has called it the best live music venue in London because of its “spellbinding surroundings and acoustics.” Previous singers that have performed in this nineteenth century built venue include Elton John and Noel Gallagher.

The ‘What’s On’ section always displays a diverse range of events – film screenings, poetry readings, famous comedians on tour, and special themed nights that combine film and music, for example their annual Halloween spectacular where a live orchestra plays the score of a horror film whilst you watch it. Christmas is an especially lovely time to go there for a date, maybe to listen to Handel’s Messiah, carol singers, or even music from the chapel’s unique 1877 organ, whilst sitting in a beautifully lit gothic church – and then heading to the bar for some prosecco. They pretty much always show It’s a Wonderful Life on the big screen each December, which is made all the more magical by the candle light, the huge Christmas tree, and the log fire burning in the bar where you can get some mulled wine or hot-chocolate. Now this would make a very memorable Christmas time date.

Union chapel is very close to Highbury and Islington station, and on several major bus routes, making it an easy to get to venue. It’s also situated at the start of Upper Street, a glorious place packed with bars and restaurants that are ideal for after-show date chat.
