White Horse Hill, Uffington

White Horse Hill

Take a step back in time for your first date with a walk up White Horse Hill – named after the mysterious Bronze-Age chalk horse you’ll find carved into the hillside. Not to mention, as the highest point in Oxfordshire, the views of the surrounding countryside are second to none.

It was also an unforgettable date for Louise and Alan who met through eHarmony – “Alan is a landscape photographer so I took that into account when planning our first date, and chose a place of outstanding natural beauty, with fantastic views of Oxfordshire,” Louise explained. “And he loved it. I packed us a picnic and we sat together on the hill until the sun went down. It was the best date I’ve ever been on, and I think he’d tell you the same.”

If this sounds up your street, there are plenty of trails and paths to follow, or you can sit, like Louise and Alan, on the hill and watch the clouds go by. Bird watchers might want to turn their gaze skyward as they’re likely to see buzzards, kestrels or red kites hunting for vole or field mice. And if walking (or sitting) isn’t really your preferred pace for a first date, you could give paragliding a go and swoop over the chalk outline to see White Horse Hill as the birds do.
