Dating jargon: webtrovert
In your dating life you’ll probably meet all types of people, and some of them may be ‘webtroverts’. Not sure what a webtrovert is? Here’s our spotters guide – let us know what you think in the comments.
What is a webtrovert?
Put simply, a webtrovert is someone who is very outgoing and confident over email, or online chat, but in person is much quieter. ‘Webtrovert’ is a bit of a misnomer as this confidence might also spread to being outgoing by text too.
Am I a webtrovert?
If you generally feel comfortable communicating via email, but go into yourself at a face-to-face meeting, then you’re probably a webtrovert. On one level, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this; a lot of people find written communication much easier than spoken. For one thing, there’s far less pressure to get it right first time, and to be able to think of something incredibly witty to say off the cuff!
The real issue though stems from how you might be perceived by the person you’re communicating with, whether it’s a date or a job interview. If your sparkling personality comes across on email (or your CV perhaps), but is missing in person they might come away a little disappointed. If this is you, then one important thing to remember is that the person who wrote those emails and chatted online is still you. You have it within you to do and say it all face-to-face, you just need to find the confidence to do so.

What if my date is one?
If your date seems to be a webtrovert – and this should be pretty clear within the first 15 minutes of your date – then the choice is yours. You can either carry the conversation yourself for a while, then make a hasty retreat, or you can try and bring your date out of themselves.
People who lack confidence sometimes just need a few positive indicators to give them a boost. Compliment your date by telling them you really enjoyed reading their last email, and then perhaps ask them to expand on something they mentioned. Keep good eye contact too, and smile in encouragement.
