5 ways to bag a second date!

Our latest research has identified the top five first date must-dos! Thankfully, the majority of Brits are making a great first impression on their dates, with the number of first dates leading to second dates soaring by 48 per cent over the past five years.

Arriving early

Okay, so you don’t want to be hanging around for hours before a date getting stressed out and nervous, but it is nice to make sure you’re on time. Arriving early gives you a little bit of prep time to calm your nerves, but it also means you definitely can’t be late (surprising, we know).

Telling jokes

In fifth place on our list of first date must-dos is telling jokes! First dates should be fun, and what better way to have fun than by spreading a little laughter. You might want to leave the dad-jokes at home for a first date though, we’re not saying they’re bad, but unless your date’s a fan of cheese, we’d stick to lactose-free first dates for now.

Offering to pay the bill

And we’re not just talking to the guys. While splitting the bill may be the 21st century way to cover the cost of your date, our research shows that when someone offers to pay the bill we’re more inclined to want to see them again.

Wearing aftershave / perfume

Smell and attraction are closely linked – that’s science – so you’ll want to smell nice for your date. When you’ve spent a lot of time making sure you look good, why not complete the look? After all, it could be love at first whiff!

Smiling a lot

The number one way to bag yourself a second date is simply to smile a lot – who’d have thought it! Research shows we find people more attractive when they smile, and what better way to show your date you’re having a good time than to show off your pearly whites?

Did you know?

• Online daters spend an average of 15 days ‘talking’ before a first date, much longer than the nine days between those who meet via friends and six days between singletons who meet on a night out.
• Nearly a quarter of all first dates are now arranged via the web, with singles that met online more likely than not to secure a second date. A key reason behind these ‘better dates’ is that they take more time getting to know a potential partner prior to meeting up.
• Despite being clear on the qualities we look for in a first date, when it comes to finding the perfect location, it would appear that as a nation we are creatures of habit. Just like five years ago, a meal at a restaurant or drinks at a bar remain the top first date venues.
