The eHarmony guide to dating a cat lover!
They’re cute, they’re playful, they’re loveable – but what about their cat?
Cats are the notorious best friend of singles, so chances are you’re bound to come across a few cat lovers during your time on the dating scene. The ancient Egyptians loved them, and modern day Brits do too, with around 8.5 million pet cats in the UK! However whether or not you’re a fan of these independent, elusive, and sometimes standoffish felines, you may still find yourself attracted to their owners.
The purrfect match?
The average house cat spends around 70% of its time sleeping – so, things should be easy right? Well, that really depends where the cat has chosen to sleep! Want to curl up on the sofa with your date? Think again. Kitty’s taken up the space in between you two and she’s not budging. Want to borrow your date’s laptop to show them this great video you saw online earlier? Shame, the warm keyboard is kitty’s new favourite bed. Quickly got up from your favourite TV show to grab a drink during the ad break? Don’t expect your warm cushy seat to be empty when you return!
Are you fur real?
It’s not all sleepy time with cats. When a cat’s awake it’s estimated that they spend around 30% of their waking time grooming themselves. Be prepared to see some of the cutest poses ever, coupled with some crazy cat gymnastics! Some people suggest that pet owners always take on some traits of their cuddly companion – if true, you may notice your date takes a little longer to get ready than you, however dating a cat lover does have it’s benefits:
- A Telegraph study of British pet owners previously found that cat owners tend to be smarter than dog lovers – being more likely to have a higher IQ score and a degree.
- Cat lovers are more chilled out. Owning a pet is good for your heart and cats have been found to lower stress levels. Petting a cat has even been found to have a positive calming effect.
- Not only has research shown that cat owners are less manipulative and more modest than most, they also score highly in terms of trustworthiness.
Cat puns freak meowt!
Let’s be honest, if you you’re just not that into cats and your date loves them, you may have some problems further down the line. For a lot of people, their pets are part of the package – a member of the family, a non-negotiable. When we love someone, that means accepting them for who they are and their pets are part of that. Things can get more complicated when you have pets of your own and you want to merge your two pet-families together. Make sure you discuss things with your partner and you’re both happy with any arrangements you need to make. No one should be forced to give up a beloved pet – it’s about finding some middle ground.
