eharmony Love Stories: Claire and Andy
Claire and Andy met on eharmony in 2010, married in 2012 and now have two children together. Here they talk us through their love story
‘I joined eharmony on New Year’s Day – new year, new start. I hoped to find someone to settle down with and someone who wanted the same things as I did. I’d been single for a while and thought, why not give eharmony a go?
Andy and I were matched that day and, after chatting online for about a month, we decided to meet up for a cinema date. Andy met me with a bag of Haribo that had every variety inside because he didn’t know which one I’d like best. I knew immediately that this ‘IT geek’ was for me.
We lived about 40 minutes’ drive away from each other but moved in together quite quickly. I knew as soon as we started living together that Andy was ‘the one’ and that we would get married. I thought something was up when we were heading off on holiday as my parents were very enthusiastic and kept telling us to have an amazing time, but I didn’t expect a proposal!
Three weeks before our holiday, Andy had told me that he wanted us to rent a boat together on one of the days. I didn’t know that he’d planned to take the boat to a secluded spot for a romantic picnic where he’d propose before rowing back. I’d done some research and decided it was impractical for us to drag a boat back into the lake after our picnic and that we’d be better off taking a boat trip with 100 other people. It wasn’t exactly the secluded, romantic experience that Andy had hoped for!
We got married in the Church where I hold Rainbow and Brownie groups and had our reception in a local hall. We didn’t want to get married in a big hotel, we wanted somewhere where we could do what we wanted. Now, we’ve been happily married for six years and have two children, Jackson and Matilda.’
‘I’d recently come out of a relationship that ended badly and I was looking to start afresh. eharmony stood out to me because it allowed me to see what people were looking for straightaway, such as whether they wanted children or what their plans were for the future. I knew that people on eharmony weren’t messing around, they wanted relationships too. I’m quite shy and I don’t really like going out to bars so online dating seemed like the perfect fit for me.
I saw Claire’s profile on New Year’s Day and sent her a message immediately. I found that the suggested questions made it easier to get the conversation started and made the whole thing less awkward. We had our first date at the cinema and I surprised Claire with flowers at the end. I didn’t want to give them to her at the start as I felt it would be embarrassing to wait in the foyer with a bouquet – everyone would know we were on a date!
I knew that I wanted to marry Claire about three months after we first met. Every year I go on holiday to the Lake District with friends and it was on that trip, about six weeks after I met Claire, that I told them all I was going to propose. I asked Claire’s parents for permission before proposing – luckily, I get on with them well and my family loves Claire too.
After my boat proposal idea was scuppered by Claire, I had to improvise. We were alone outside of our holiday cottage one morning when I just decided to go for it – and she said yes!’
