eharmony Love Stories: Nick and Sarah
Nick and Sarah met on eharmony in February 2013 and married in the summer of 2017. Here they talk us through their love story
‘I’d been single for six months before joining eharmony. While running my own business and looking after my three children, I found it difficult to meet someone and I’d had some negative experiences using free apps.
I really liked the way eharmony’s Relationship Questionnaire really made you think about your profile and found that the multiple-choice questions were a great way to break the ice when messaging matches.
As soon as I saw Sarah’s profile, I could see that she ticked a lot of the boxes in her About You, and she’s really pretty, of course! We started messaging and there was a spark there before we even met.
Our first date was in Sarah’s lunch hour at a bar called Morans in Cheltenham. Lunch felt like a good option, just in case things didn’t work out, but I ended up wishing we’d met in the evening instead. After that initial meeting, we had a proper date at the Gumstool and it was fantastic. I think it’s safe to say we fell for each other – big time! I even stole our first kiss.’
The ‘I love you’ moment
‘I was in Dublin for business and was so sick that I had to spend three days in bed, but I still managed to send her flowers with ‘I love you on them to her work.
Things were going so well between us that we went on holiday to the Canary Islands together after about eight weeks of dating. While we were away we decided that Sarah was going to get a new job and move to Bristol.
I proposed while we were spending a week in Portugal. I’d bought the ring and planned to pop the question over dinner on the Saturday night. After putting the ring in the hotel safe, I started chatting to the hotel manager and she had a friend who owned a boat, so we hatched a plan. Boat trip, private island, tapas on the beach, champagne, sunset and a proposal – the whole nine yards!
The ring was supposed to be attached to a red rose and placed in front of Sarah when I asked for dessert. I had my speech all lined up. As soon as the rose appeared though, there was no ring! As panic set in, I looked down and saw the ring beside me in the sand. Quickly grabbing it and now not really knowing what to say, I came up with ‘Think you need a nice ring with your dessert!’ Cue the tears.‘
‘I’d been single for a year before meeting Nick and I found it difficult to meet people – I didn’t feel comfortable being approached when out and about. I liked Nick’s profile immediately and thought we seemed to share similarities.
After our first date we started speaking almost every day but, unfortunately, the distance stopped us seeing each other as much as we liked. We still managed to meet most weekends and once in the week. We were meeting each other’s friends and families after about 6 weeks and I decided to move to Bristol soon after.
Now, we’re married and parents to our little boy Jenson, as well as bringing up each other’s children as if they were our own. We both feel that we’re truly with the right person, we make each other incredibly happy and our relationship just works.
Without eharmony, we would never have met. We’re truly grateful for logging on.’
