eharmony Love Stories: Paula and Johnny
Paula and Johnny met on eharmony in 2012 and married in September 2017. Here they talk us through their love story
‘I’d recently come out of a six-year relationship when I decided to give online dating a try – I wanted to get used to meeting new people again. eharmony seemed like the best fit for me as I liked the fact it was a commitment; it’s not cheap and the questionnaire meant that only people who were serious about finding someone special would be bothered to fill it in.
Johnny’s profile caught my eye immediately. I was intrigued by his job as a graphic designer and I liked that he was a fan of Formula One. We made each other laugh straightaway and exchanged really long, detailed messages.
Our first date was about three weeks after we first started speaking. We went to the Trafford Centre in Manchester for a meal followed by the cinema. It felt relaxed immediately; we laughed a lot and shared stories – it lasted about four hours in the end!
Now, we’re newly married and looking forward to moving into a new home soon. Our relationship just works, even though we can be quite different. Johnny loves to clean and nag, while I’m very relaxed and will happily let Johnny do all the housework. We have a cat – Duncan – who’s more like a dog and he’s hilarious! Despite our differences, we do still have a lot in common. It’s great that we’re free to be our own people and spend time alone, but we always love coming home to one another.’
‘After Paula and I had our first date, things moved quickly between us. We met up again two days later, and then the day after that. Quickly, we were spending every weekend and most evenings during the week together and speaking many times each day. Within three months, we’d met each other’s friends and family and I first said ‘I love you’ at my Dad’s house around four months into our relationship. We moved in together five months later.
Marriage had been a frequent conversation topic between us and Paula had been dropping hints, but I still managed to keep the proposal a surprise. I arranged a professional photographer to take pictures of us in the park where we’d had our third date almost three years earlier. I picked my moment carefully and popped the question – with the photographer capturing every moment for our families. After that, I whisked her away to the Lake District for a romantic long weekend.
We got married at Beeston Manor in Preston in September 2017, five years to the day since we became boyfriend and girlfriend.’
