If you want to attract better quality dates, then there’s one really simple thing you can do: update your profile photos.

First things first, if you use better quality images than you’ll attract better quality dates straightaway. High quality images send the message that you’re serious about finding love online and not just looking for a casual relationship. So, ditch the poor quality, blurry shots and enlist a friend who’s into photograph to help.

To attract good quality dates there are three main things that your dating photos need to do. They need to make sure you look good; to showcase elements of your personality; and to help you to stand out from the sea of other dating profiles online.

Feel and look good

How you feel about yourself is integral to looking good. If you start online dating feeling confident and happy in yourself, then you’ll come across as a much more attractive person. The same is true for your profile photos.

When you’re ready to head out and take some new photos, make sure that you’re feeling good about yourself and your head is in a good place. It’s not about being at your ideal weight or having perfect skin, it’s that feeling you get when you believe you’re looking good, despite imperfections, because you feel self-confident. If you’re struggling with this, make sure that you’re taking good care of yourself, getting lots of exercise and eating healthily. You might want to treat yourself to a new outfit, get a haircut or ask a friend to help with your make-up – anything that will help you radiate confidence.

The one thing that your photographer can’t control is how you feel about yourself, yet this is the one thing that can take your photos from ordinary to awesome.

Take control of your inner critic and be as confident as you can to take truly great photos.

Tell your story

The more your photos reflect who you are as a person and the more clues that they give about you and your lifestyle, the more compelling they will be.

One of the best ways to showcase your personality is with your clothes. Choose a variety of outfits that show off different aspects of your personality. Remember to include one shot that is close to how you would choose to look on a first date.

Another way to tell you story is to go somewhere you love or do something that you love. Shots of you visiting your favourite street market, having a coffee at that café by the river, or cycling through the park are great for letting people know a bit more about you. The casual nature of these photos are especially good for dating as they often appear less posed and more relaxed, like you’re not trying too hard.

Props can also be used to show off your personality, as well as giving you something to do with your hands! Some of my favourite props are ice creams, hats, big headphones, clutch bags and cameras – all great for capturing relaxed, casual photos.

Stand out from the crowd

To really make the most of your profile photos, you’ll want to make sure that they stand out from the crowd. The best way to do this is to use high quality images that are well lit and in focus, with good clean backgrounds. If you ditch any blurry, dark shots and replace them with light, bright images, you’ll immediately see uplift in the number of people clicking on your profile.

It’s also a good idea to make sure you’re the main thing in the profile photo. If you have photos of you with friends it lessens the impact of your photo and people often can’t be bothered to try and find you in the shot. Make things easy for them by being the focal point of the profile photo.

Help your shots stand out by adding bright colours. If you like wearing colourful clothes, then why not try bright colour blocking? A flash of red, orange, blue or green can help your photos jump off the page. Red is a particularly good colour for both sexes. People are naturally drawn to red as it is associated with love and passion. If you prefer wearing more neutral colours, aim to find some colour in the background of your photos so that you don’t miss out.

All of these tips aside, if you go out, relax and have fun while on your photo shoot, then you’re bound to end up with some great shots that will attract people to your profile.
