Emma and Kevin
Emma: “Kevin and I first communicated for around three weeks before we arranged to meet up. We lived 60 miles apart so decided to meet half way and take our dogs for a walk along the river. I don’t know what happened but we both got lost, ending up stranded on one side of the river! We couldn’t get across so we decided to wade through, which was going well until I accidentally slipped and fell, dragging Kevin into the water with me! We both laughed hysterically and formed a bond that went from strength to strength.
I have Crohns disease and Kevin had never even heard of it or its complications. He had no idea really what I’d been through or what was about to happen. We’d been dating for two months when I went to spend the weekend with Kevin in Penrith. Everything was perfect; we’d had a lovely evening and planned to take our dogs out to the beach the following morning. The next day Kevin cooked breakfast and we were getting ready to leave the house when I had a sudden onset of abdominal pain. I was screaming in pain as Kevin rang my mother who told him to ring 999. Kevin rang the ambulance and I was taken to hospital for a few days where I was advised that they’d need to operate in a couple of months to untwist my bowel.
I had no choice but to stay in Penrith as I needed to be close to the specialist and the local doctor who had taken on my care. Kevin was amazing and very supportive. He had actually done some research on the internet about Crohns disease to make sure that he had a better understanding of my condition. I stayed with Kevin for four months while I was recovering from my surgery. One day as we were sat outside in the sunshine, Kevin was cooking on the barbeque and turned to me and said, smiling, ‘I presume you’ve moved in then.’ I agreed and told him that it looked like I had!
We both discussed our feelings for each other and decided we should get a place together. Kevin sold his house and we moved into a brand new barn conversion, with the most amazing views. We now have our two dogs, three cats and a foal and we all live happily together. On the first anniversary of the day we met, Kevin proposed. We truly have met our soul mate in each other. We’re best friends and life-long partners!”
