eHarmony Success Couples

Nearly Gave Up

Richard and Nicola

Epsom

Richard: “As a primary school teacher, I wasn’t really meeting many women my age, only my student’s mothers which I didn’t think was very appropriate! My mum was giving me a lot of pressure to get a girlfriend so after seeing an advert on TV for eHarmony; I thought I’d give it a go. I wasn’t at all convinced that I’d find someone on it though! I’d also come to the point of nearly giving up on eHarmony but then Nicola’s profile popped up!

The main thing I remember about our first date (except for the fact that Nicola was over an hour late!) was that there was an important football match on that night, and we went to a pub that was showing the game. The screen was behind Nicola’s head and I was in the perfect position to watch the match. I realised at the end of the night that I didn’t have a single clue what the score was and had forgotten that the game was even on! I knew Nicola was special then - it’s not like me to miss a match!

I proposed to Nicola on a day out in central London. I wasn’t nervous (Nicola says that I never get nervous about anything) and I was quite confident that she’d say yes considering I’d found a note with her ring size conveniently placed as a book mark in a book I was reading! I proposed on London Bridge but didn’t get the ring out of my pocket properly because I was so scared of the wind knocking it out of my hand and it fallen into the Thames! We went over to a really nice piano bar and there was 1920s music playing and I gave her the ring then. Of course, she said yes at the bridge!”

Nicola: “I was working as a classical music concert planner and wasn’t meeting any men at all and online dating seemed like the thing to do. I’d tried a few of the free sites and found that the men were only after one thing and not a relationship, which is what I wanted. The questionnaire on eHarmony was very helpful and I believe it prevents men who are after a ‘fling’ from joining up, which I liked!

I remember seeing Richard’s profile and loved that he had written about his nephews – I thought he has to be a nice guy the way he talked about them in his profile. We were chatting for a couple of weeks before exchanging our personal email addresses and we were getting on very well, so we decided to meet up.

I was actually over an hour late for our first date! I get really bad travel sickness and had the brilliant idea of getting a bus as that would be better for me than the tube. Halfway through the journey, I had to get off the bus to be sick! I ended up being so late while I was trying to make myself feel better and I was texting Richard all the time telling him that I was on my way, hoping that he’d wait for me. He was very sweet and he waited for over an hour and kept checking up on me to see if I was okay or if he could help. I was already terrified about meeting him and being sick and late didn’t help!

As it turned out, we had a fantastic time on our first date and it wasn’t long at all before I felt totally comfortable with him. We’ve since met each other’s families and friends and Richard proposed to me in October in London. The ring is absolutely perfect and I couldn’t be happier. We celebrated with champagne at a lovely piano bar and I can’t wait to get married!”
