Mat and Monica
Mat: “I joined eHarmony because I thought it would be an interesting way to meet new people. I run my own business so for me, meeting someone at work was absolutely out of the picture!
I’d been on eHarmony for about a month, communicating with a few really nice women, but I never felt enough of a connection to want to meet up for a date. That’s when Monica popped up. I read her profile and just had this feeling that she was the kind of person that I would really get on well with. We emailed for a few weeks, both very busy at work but determined to find a time we could meet up.
We met in Shepherd’s Bush and went to a lovely wine bar. I was quite nervous I admit, but Monica is just such a warm and friendly person that I really needn’t be. I felt at ease within minutes. I remember Monica got up to go to the toilet and she tripped over her chair! She was so embarrassed and I thought she was wonderful. For a ballet dancer, she’s one of the clumsiest people I’ve ever met! I also remember on our first date that everything she was saying, I totally agreed and related to; I knew we could have something special. We met up the next day, and then the day after that too, we weren’t interested in meeting anyone else.
We moved in together officially in January of this year, but we’d basically been living together long before that. I went to Australia to meet her family and we all get on so well. I went out one night to a bar with her dad and asked for his permission to propose to Monica. After a jokey ‘no’ he said of course I could!
I had the proposal planned out, I wanted it to be perfect but that night I got so excited that I proposed to Monica as soon as I got back. I didn’t have a ring yet but when I got it, I made sure I proposed again, officially with the ring.
Monica and the other ballet teachers at her school had just finished the end of year school performance of Peter Pan and the teachers were all going out to the theatre to celebrate the start of the school holidays. I turned up outside the theatre and surprised her. I got down on one knee and brought out the ring and proposed. Everyone was gasping, applauding and cheering and thankfully she said yes!”
